Meet the Artist: Yun Cheng

by ,

Yun Cheng is a dancer and choreographer working on our Ambient Jam programme. She is a PhD student at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, researching how the Feldenkrais Method influences choreographic practices.

This is my first term working with Entelechy Arts. My Feldenkrais teacher [lead Ambient Jam and Walking Through Walls artist] Rainer Knupp introduced me to Ambient Jam. I found myself admiring the work Entelechy Arts does with its members. They hold a safe, caring space which is without hierarchy, and they emphasise what they learn from their members more than what they offer them.

During my first and second sessions, I worked with [Ambient Jam member] Josephine a lot. Josephine is proactive at Ambient Jam. She would use her hands and feet to express clear messages about how she wanted to engage with me bodily. At the same time, she has her own little dance pattern of moving her head and fingers together with the music. Her insisting on her movement patterns and the connection with me — a new assistant dancer she encountered — inspired me to understand more profoundly that rhythm, movement, and touch are necessities for everyone to feel connected and uplifted. There is a need for every one of us to express our inner voices through music and dance.

My artistic focus has been on the application of the Feldenkrais Method in choreographic processes. We presented our performance ‘The Living Body’ in February 2024, and I am keen to continue to develop this creative process into a workshop form that welcomes non-dancers to participate and experience this somatic-influenced way of creative dancing.
